Can You Get a Tax Deduction for Donating Prom Dresses?
Yes. Prom dresses and formal gowns donated to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit are tax-deductible at fair market value. Most prom dresses mean a deduction of $50-$500, depending on designer and condition.
A once-worn prom dress is just taking up closet space. Donated, it gets worn to another prom, you get the deduction, and 100% of net rental profits are split across the charities on our Honor Roll at year end.
Why Donate Your Prom Dress?
Worn Once
Most prom dresses are worn for a single night. Donate instead of letting it collect dust.
Tax Savings
A deduction of roughly 30-50% of what you paid for the dress.
Another Student Wears It
Your dress goes to a student who can't spend hundreds on something worn once.
Sustainable Fashion
Keeps a perfectly good dress out of the landfill.
What's Your Dress Worth?
Fair market value depends on brand, style, and condition:
Worth knowing: Dresses worn once typically retain 40-60% of retail value. New with tags can approach full price.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much can I deduct for donating a prom dress?
You deduct fair market value: the price a buyer would pay for it today, not the original retail price. The value ranges on this page show typical amounts by brand and condition.
Do I need a receipt or appraisal to claim the deduction?
For donations under $500, our itemized receipt is enough. Over $500, you also file IRS Form 8283 with your return. Items valued over $5,000 require a qualified appraisal.
Can I mail my prom dress from any state?
Yes. We accept mail-in donations from anywhere in the US. Once your package arrives, we send an itemized 501(c)(3) tax receipt within 5-7 business days.
What condition does the prom dress need to be in?
Clean and ready to wear again. Small fixable issues like a loose hem are fine. Large stains or tears are not.
