Donate Nice Halloween Costumes

You wore it once. It was great. Now it is in a bag on the closet floor. Mail it to us, we wash it, and someone rents it next October. You get a tax receipt and a closet shelf back.

Where to Donate Halloween Costumes After Halloween

Most good costumes get worn exactly once. The thrift store will take it, but a $150 costume on a thrift rack in November sells for $6 or goes to the bale. A school drama department might want it, if you can find the right teacher and they have the storage.

We do something different. FashionablyGood is a 501(c)(3) that rents clothing out instead of selling it. A good costume that arrives in November gets cleaned, photographed, listed, and rented for next year's parties, themed galas, photo shoots, and Halloween itself. Then it comes back, gets cleaned again, and goes out the year after that.

Shipping is free. We send prepaid mailers, or you print a label and ship directly. Every package gets an itemized receipt naming each piece, which is the paperwork you need to deduct it.

What a Rentable Halloween Costume Looks Like

Battle of the Sexes, 1973. A couples costume: white warm-up jackets with piping, tennis whites, headbands, wire-frame glasses, and two wooden rackets. Nothing here came out of a bag. The jackets are real vintage track jackets, the whites are real tennis clothes, and the whole thing works again next October for anyone who can find a racket.

That is the bar. Real garments, assembled with some thought, that an adult would pay to borrow. If your costume passes that test, we want it.

What Counts as a "Nice" Costume

This is the one place we are picky. We can only rent what an adult would be happy to be seen in, so the test is simple: would you have paid to rent this?

🎭 Yes, send it

Theatrical and cosplay-grade costumes, anything you built or had made, period pieces (flapper, Victorian, '70s disco, '80s prom), full group themes, quality licensed character costumes in adult sizes, masquerade and masked-ball looks, capes, corsets, tailcoats, and the accessories that make them work.

🛍️ Take it to a local thrift shop instead

Bagged polyester costumes under about $40 new, most kids' costumes (premium pageant or cosplay pieces excepted), inflatable suits, anything torn, stained, or missing the piece that makes it recognizable. Those still deserve a second home, just not in a rental catalog.

Not sure which side yours lands on? Email a photo. We answer the same day most of the time and we will tell you honestly if it is a better fit for the thrift store.

What Happens to a Donated Costume

  1. It arrives and gets logged. Every piece goes on an itemized list the day it is unpacked. That list is your receipt, emailed within 5-7 business days.
  2. It gets cleaned. Washable pieces are laundered. Structured, beaded, or lined pieces go to the dry cleaner. Nothing is listed until it is clean.
  3. It gets photographed and listed. Costumes go into the themed party and costume section of the rental catalog with their sizes and measurements.
  4. It rents next year. Halloween is the obvious season, but themed galas, murder mystery dinners, Gatsby parties, and photo shoots run all year. A good costume works more than one night.
  5. The profit goes to charity. 100% of net rental profits are split across the charities on our Honor Roll at year end. Donors nominate the charities, and every nomination goes on the list.

The honest timeline: a costume mailed in November is listed over the winter and takes its first rental in the following season. You are donating for next Halloween, not this one.

Why the Week After Halloween Is the Right Time

Three reasons, none of them about us.

  • You still know what it is. In March that bag is "some costume stuff." In November it is a full Phantom of the Opera with the cape and the mask, and you can write that on the form.
  • It counts for this year's taxes. A noncash donation counts in the year the charity receives it. Ship by mid-December and the receipt is dated 2026. The December 31 rules are on a separate page.
  • It gets cleaned before anything sets. Makeup on a collar, fog-machine residue, that one spilled drink. All of that comes out in November. By next September it is part of the costume.

Are Halloween Costume Donations Tax Deductible?

Yes, when you donate to a 501(c)(3) and itemize. The deduction is the fair market value of the costume in its current condition, which is what someone would pay for it used, not what you paid. A rented-once theatrical costume that cost $200 is often worth a meaningful fraction of that; a bagged costume is worth very little, which is one more reason to take those to the thrift shop.

We do not assign values. No legitimate charity does. You get an itemized list naming each piece and you value it yourself, with help from the 2026 value guide. If your noncash donations for the year pass $500, Form 8283 goes with your return.

If you are the type who wants to get everything out of this, the DonationMaxxing checklist covers timing, bunching, and nominating a charity.

Group Costumes, Theater Closets, and Event Leftovers

A matched set rents better than a single piece, so if your whole friend group did the same theme, send the set together and tell us it is a set. Community theaters clearing a costume closet, event planners with a themed-gala wardrobe in storage, and photographers retiring shoot props can all use the same process. Ask for several mailers at once, or email us about a larger shipment and we will sort out the labels.

Everything ships. We do not do pickups, even locally, because the mail is faster for everyone.

Halloween Costume Donation Questions

Do you take used Halloween costumes?

Yes. Almost every costume we receive has been worn once. We clean each piece before it is listed, so worn is fine. Damaged is the problem, not used.

Do I need to wash the costume before I send it?

No. We clean everything on arrival regardless, so skip the trip to the dry cleaner. If something is visibly muddy, a quick shake-out keeps the rest of the package clean, and that is all.

Will you take masks, wigs, and props?

Masks and props that belong to a costume, yes, send them with it. Wigs only if they are good quality and clean. Weapons props, no, even obvious fakes, because the mail does not love them.

What about licensed character costumes?

Adult-size, well-made licensed costumes are welcome. The thin bagged version of the same character is better off at a thrift shop.

Can I rent my own costume back next year?

Yes, if it is available that week. People do this. It is cheaper than storing it for a year and you get to wear it to a different party.

How is this different from your themed costume page?

Same program. The themed and statement pieces page covers year-round themed wear like flapper dresses and western looks. This page is for the Halloween costume on your closet floor right now.
