How the tax deduction works

We're a 501(c)(3), so clothing donations are deductible. Here's what the IRS needs, what we provide, and where the limits are.

We're a registered 501(c)(3)

OnlyFuego Corporation, doing business as FashionablyGood. EIN 41-3469239. Donations qualify for the standard federal tax deduction for charitable giving.

You get an itemized receipt with each item described, and our value-guide data to back up the numbers you report.

📄

Itemized receipts

Each piece listed by name, brand, and condition, with the value you'll use when you file. Sent within two weeks of receiving your donation.

💰

Fair market value backup

We send comparable sales data - what similar pieces have sold for on resale sites - so the number on your receipt has a paper trail.

Built for the IRS

The receipts include everything Form 8283 asks for: organization name, EIN, date received, description, and our acknowledgement.

What the IRS expects

Paperwork you'll need

  • A receipt from the charity (we provide this)
  • A description of each item
  • Your fair market value figure
  • The date we received the donation

How to value the pieces

  • Use current resale value, not what you paid originally
  • Adjust for condition and wear
  • Comparable sales are the standard reference (we send these)
  • Donations over $5,000 require an independent appraisal

Limits to know

  • The deduction generally caps at 50% of your adjusted gross income
  • Anything you can't deduct that year carries forward five years
  • Items over $5,000 need an appraisal from a credentialed appraiser - not from us
  • Talk to your tax preparer about your specific situation

A few things to think about at tax time

Spread a big donation

If you're donating a whole closet, splitting it across two tax years can help you stay under the AGI cap and use the deduction in full.

Bundle with other giving

Clothing donations stack with cash giving to other charities. If you're close to the itemized-deduction threshold, that can tip you over.

Get a real appraisal if it's big

Anything over $5,000 needs an independent appraisal. A CPA can connect you with a qualified clothing appraiser.

Questions about your situation?
